Now that you have purchased a hosted training opportunity, the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) wants to ensure that you have everything you need to be successful. The SCCM Hosted Training Team conducts the day-to-day operations for all hosted training. If you have any questions about running your training, please contact:

SCCM Responsibilities Hosted Training Site Responsibilities
SCCM is responsible for maintaining hosted training records. This includes:
  • Current approved hosted training consultants
  • Current approved instructors, including teaching records
  • Training locations, along with acting directors and submitted training rosters
  • Demographic information for enrolled training attendees (if provided)

 
The hosted training director/coordinator is responsible for planning and conducting the training. This includes:
  • Selecting faculty
  • Marketing the training*
  • Coordinating logistics
  • Establishing participant registration processes
  • Requesting necessary training resources (e.g., audiovisual equipment, skill station equipment, catering)
  • Hosted training sites are expected to keep materials related to running training as long as they have learners actively completing the training.
*If a site creates its own marketing materials for the training, SCCM must approve the materials before distribution. For more information, contact hostedtraining@sccm.org
 
SCCM Provides: Hosted Training Site Provides:
  • Travel expenses for course consultant and visiting instructors
  • If requested, honoraria should be a reasonable, negotiated fee to cover time away from practice or may be provided pro bono upon request. The amount should be arranged between the course site and consultant/visiting instructor.
  • Comfortable meeting room seating and food and beverages (for breaks and meals)
  • Materials for course attendees and instructor packets
  • Equipment for presentation delivery (if needed)
  • Equipment for skill stations (if needed)
  • For ultrasound courses only: live male models for skill stations
  • Accredited continuing education credit for attendees (optional)*

*SCCM offers accredited continuing education (ACE) credit for online didactic training materials. Because SCCM is not directly involved in planning live training, it cannot issue ACE credit for live training offerings. If the institution or training sponsor is a national- or state-accredited continuing education provider, it may wish to offer continuing education for the training.
 

Purchasing Access for Learners


Hosted training sites typically include hospitals, universities, nonprofit institutions, and SCCM-approved medical organizations. To host training, a site will place an order for learners through the Hosted Training Purchase Portal. Orders are reviewed and invoiced based on review of the following criteria:
  • Availability of training supplies and support personnel
  • Number of participating instructor faculty
  • Approved hosted training consultant (first-time training sites)

After the invoice for learners is paid, the site will have access to training materials in MySCCM under the Director Resources tab. Once a site selects training dates, the dates should be added in MySCCM under the Director Resources tab. When entering training dates, the site will be asked to confirm whether the dates can be posted on the SCCM website.

Course Faculty


Hosted training is led by an SCCM-approved director and at least two SCCM-approved instructors. The director will be the main contact for the course and is responsible for selecting instructors and ensuring that courses run smoothly. The director may count as one of the two approved instructors, and other presenters or local clinical experts may be invited. A course coordinator is often involved to provide administrative, organizational, and other types of support.

A course consultant is required for sites running a hosted course for the first time as well as coordinators and directors who have never run the course. The consultant will provide guidance, help with organization and administrative issues, and answer questions about course content. Consultants are considered course experts, familiar with all aspects of the course content and administration. The consultant may serve as an instructor but may not lead skill stations or scenarios. The SCCM Hosted Training Team will help connect sites with available consultants.

Course Materials

 

Sample Course Agendas. Agendas can be tailored for learners who are new to the course or for learners who have previously taken the course.
Textbook. Learners will automatically receive a training eBook, which learners ideally should read before taking the pretest. If a site would like learners to receive a print book as well, the site can request this, and the site will be invoiced for shipping costs.

Presentations. All training materials are available in MySCCM under the Director Resources tab. Presentations may be administered online or presented in person. Schedule variations are permitted for the convenience of learners; however, minimum attendance requirements should be met for training completion. This is a requirement and should be presented to learners in the introductory lecture.

Skill Stations. Some hosted training courses include skill stations, which are interactive teaching experiences through case scenarios and skills-based training guided by instructor and learner objectives. Instructors should use the case scenarios (when available) to generalize pertinent information, ensuring that the focus remains on the objectives. Learners should be encouraged to answer the questions included in the skill stations and to participate by exhibiting physical skills whenever possible.

  • Skill stations may be interspersed with presentations throughout the day or grouped together.
  • Recommended learner-to-instructor ratio skill stations is 8:1.
  • Set up skill stations in two separate rooms. If possible, keep the skill station rooms close together and close to the presentation area to help with movement through the skill stations.
  • Be prepared with extra batteries and bulbs for laryngoscopes, extension cords, tape to hold cords in place, and backup methods in case skill station equipment fails.

Skill Station Equipment Lists:
 
  • Skill stations may be interspersed with presentations throughout the day or grouped together.
  • Recommended learner-to-instructor ratio for skill stations is 6:1.
  • Set up skill stations in separate rooms. If possible, keep the skill station rooms close together and close to the presentation area to help with movement through the skill stations.
  • Allocate the same amount of time for each skill station.

Skill Station Equipment Lists:
  • All skill stations should be included in the course.
  • Skill stations may be interspersed with presentations throughout the day or grouped together.
  • Ideally, participants should spend 35 minutes at each skill station, allowing for three skills to be taught in a two-hour span. Each skill station should be covered in the same amount of time.
  • Recommended learner-to-instructor ratio for skill stations is 5:1.
  • The course director and consultant will serve as “floaters,” available to answer questions and back up instructors as needed.
  • Skill stations should be set up in one room that is close to the presentation area. This will help with movement through the stations.
  • Ensure that all skill stations are prominently labeled so attendees can easily find the correct station.
  • If possible, one ultrasound machine per skill station and one backup should be provided.
  • If possible, it is helpful to have extra equipment available and to have ultrasound machine representatives on site in case there are problems with the equipment.

  • Recommended learner-to-instructor ratio skill stations is 8:1.
  • Set up skill stations in two separate rooms. If possible, keep the skill station rooms close together and close to the presentation area to help with movement through the skill stations.
  • Be prepared with extra batteries, extension cords, tape to hold cords in place, and backup methods in case skill station equipment fails.

Skill Station Equipment Lists:
Skill stations should be scored as pass/fail. Although this type of scoring introduces an element of subjectivity, instructors evaluate participants as objectively as possible by adhering to the learner objectives. It is the responsibility of the course director and instructors to engage learners in skill stations to ensure that they participate and understand the skill. Course directors will be required to report that learners passed skill stations before certificates are distributed.
Additional Course Materials (Ultrasound Courses Only) Course sites hosting an ultrasound course will receive a supplemental course handout for each attendee. These handouts should be distributed in person and may be used for reference and note-taking during the skill stations.

Each presentation ends with three to five questions instructors should ask attendees to ensure that they understood the key points of the presentation. Course sites may use audience response system software or a poll-taking app or ask attendees to respond by raising their hands. The course consultant will discuss these logistics with the course director and coordinator.

For some skill stations, SCCM provides additional views called “hot clips” that may be difficult to view on models. These are for optional use in the course. If used, instructors are encouraged to incorporate them and refer attendees to the hot clip views as part of skill station training. All instructors should be able to explain the hot clip views if they are available at the skill station. Because of the size of these files, it is recommended that they be viewed on iPads.

Ultrasound sites are provided with a model window rating form. Course directors are encouraged to ask faculty to complete this form for each model before the course so models can be assigned to skill stations appropriate for best viewing. All sites must use live models during the course. It is the responsibility of the course site to select and contract with a company for this service. To the fullest extent permissible under applicable law, SCCM disclaims all such warranties, express or implied, as well as any liability for any relationship between the course site and a third party.

Certificates


One certificate will be issued for each learner who successfully completes the training. Successful completion means the learner must:
  • Attend each in-person day of the training
  • Perform skill stations or scenarios at a satisfactory level
  • Pass the posttest with a score of 70% or higher
  • Complete the participant evaluation

The hosted training coordinator or director should submit these materials through the Director Resources tab in MySCCM prior to issuing certificates:
  • Faculty listing, including module(s) taught by each
  • Training roster, including name, email address, and profession of each participant
  • Training site evaluation

Hosted training coordinators or directors will be able to print or email PDF certificates to learners who pass the training. Certificates include the date of training completion and will be valid for four years, after which the individual may retake the training to remain up to date on content and to be considered current in the training. SCCM will not notify learners of upcoming certificate expiration.

Post-Course Evaluations


SCCM will send a brief post-course evaluation to learners 90 days after a learner completes the posttest.

Appeals/Grievance Process


In the unlikely event that a dispute arises involving a learner that a course site cannot resolve to the learner’s satisfaction (eg, course score), inform the attendee how to initiate SCCM’s hosted training appeal process.
  • The training attendee should notify the SCCM Hosted Training Team of the matter in writing. The correspondence should state the issue(s) disputed, the training site, and training dates.
  • Additional information may be requested by SCCM.
  • The chairperson of the SCCM committee that is responsible for the training will arbitrate the dispute.
  • The training attendee may submit a final appeal to the SCCM Council, if desired.

This process is in place to assist with difficult situations in which the hosted training director and faculty believe that an attendee has not demonstrated sufficient understanding or skill proficiency to receive a passing score. If a training site is aware of an attendee’s dissatisfaction, the director should notify the SCCM Hosted Training Team after the training is held. A simple phone call may resolve the dispute.

Online Testing


The pretest will become available to learners as soon as the course director adds the learner to the course roster. Learners will receive an email with instructions to access the pretest when it becomes available. Learners should complete the pretest before the course begins. Pretest answers should not be shared or discussed with learners during the course.

Learners will be tested only on material from the presentations. A score of 70% or higher is needed to pass. SCCM recommends that the course director instructs learners to complete the online posttest within two weeks after completing the skill stations. It is the course director's responsibility to follow up with learners to ensure that they complete the posttest.

Learners will have three tries to pass the posttest. Their first attempt will be unassisted, meaning they will see the question and options. On the second and third attempts, they will have access to the references and rationales for missed questions.

All test progress is saved in real time There is a “save and continue” option if a learner has to stop the examination and continue at a later time. Attempts do not have to immediately follow each other.
