PCCM Audio Summary - May 2025

The May 2025 issue of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) features five original research articles spanning topics from extubation failure post-cardiac surgery to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in children with lower respiratory tract infections and use of biomarkers to identify pediatric ARDS, as well as fluid overload and outcomes in socioeconomically disadvantaged children with acquired brain injuries. Clinical investigation articles highlight quality improvement methods to reduce the incidence of severe arterial catheter-associated proximal ischemic injuries, variables associated with femoral central venous catheter tip position, standardizing handoffs for interfacility transfers to the pediatric intensive care unit, use of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry to examine extubation readiness practices for patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), dual-lumen versus multisite cannulation in ECMO, evaluation of the Phoenix criteria for sepsis in Bolivian children, and use of azithromycin for bronchiolitis. The PCCM trial examines parent and caregiver attitudes and the performance of research without prior consent.
