SCCM Welcomes New Editor-In-Chief of Critical Care Medicine

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) has named Jonathan E. Sevransky, MD, MHS, FCCM, as the new editor-in-chief of Critical Care Medicine, starting in October 2024.

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) has named Jonathan E. Sevransky, MD, MHS, FCCM, as the new editor-in-chief of Critical Care Medicine (CCM). His term will officially start in October 2024, when he will succeed Timothy G. Buchman, PhD, MD, MCCM, who has served as editor-in-chief since 2014.

“One of my goals as editor-in-chief will be to expand the journal to other mediums outside of print to reach critical care professionals who enjoy other media such as podcasts and video,” said Dr. Sevransky. “Just like the delivery of critical care, the CCM editorial leadership group represents a team effort, and I look forward to working with a wonderful team to achieve more than I could on my own and ensuring the important research in CCM is delivered to our readers to improve patient care.”

SCCM chose Dr. Sevransky because of his editorial and research expertise. He has served as an associate editor of CCM and section editor of CCM’s Concise Definitive Reviews, which are reviews of clinical areas of critical care written by leading authorities in the field. He has led single- and multicenter clinical trials on sepsis and successfully mentored junior investigators in similar roles. He has played a leading role in the development and maturation of three clinical trials groups—the United States Critical Illness and Injury Trials Group; SCCM’s Discovery, the Critical Care Research Network, of which he served as chair; and the Emory Critical Illness Research Center (E-CIRC), of which he is founding director. His current research explores methods to lower the cost of ICU clinical trials using novel technology and trial designs.

Dr. Sevransky is also a leader in critical care as a professor of medicine, eminent physician, and associate division director for critical care in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. At Emory, he also serves as site director of critical care and MICU director at Emory University Hospital within the Emory Critical Care Center. His clinical, research, mentoring, educational, and administrative responsibilities are focused on improving the care of patients with life-threatening illness.

A longtime member of SCCM, Dr. Sevransky has served as chair of the SCCM iCritical Care Podcast Committee, president of the Internal Medicine Section, founding chair of the Baltimore Chapter, chair of the Multiprofessional Critical Care Review Course Committee, and member of the Finance, Strategic Planning, Congress Planning, and Surviving Sepsis Guideline committees. He served for five years on the American College of Critical Care Medicine Board of Regents and received Presidential Citation Awards from SCCM in 2006, 2007, 2013 through 2015, and 2017 through 2021.
