Neurosciences and the Pandemic
This article was first published in the Fall 2020 issue of Critical Connections. We have much to elucidate on the neurologic manifestations associated with COVID-19. Reports have been published linking severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to stroke, seizure, encephalitis, and both central and peripheral demyelination. Various forms of encephalopathies encompassing alteration of consciousness, psychosis, and neurocognitive impairment have been reported. Furthermore, there is concern that SARS-CoV-2 may play a role in multiple sclerosis pathogenicity based on animal models and postmortem brain examinations.
