SCCM Journals Earn Recognition, Increased Influence

Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) has announced an impressive impact factor of 2.330 as its first-ever factor. This, coupled with an immediacy index (an indicator of how quickly articles in the journal are cited) of 0.898, has the journal well-placed among the relevant pediatric specialty journals. In fact, it has the sixth highest immediacy index of 85 pediatric journals.

“Clearly this was a very strong start for PCCM that exceeded all of our expectations,” said PCCM editor Patrick M. Kochanek, MD, FCCM. “It suggests that the field was very much ready for our pediatric journal."

Critical Care Medicine (CCM), long considered the premier peer-reviewed, scientific publication in critical care, also received significant boosts in its impact factor and immediacy index. CCM’s 2008 impact factor is 6.594, up from 6.283 in 2007; the immediacy index is 2.065, up from 1.97 the previous year. Of journals that publish primarily (more than 50%) critical care articles, CCM has the highest impact factor and immediacy index.

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) is proud to publish two journals now ranked in the top 10 among the 21 critical care publications. CCM is ranked second and PCCM is ranked tenth. Both journals demonstrate high standards of excellence and have proved to be an important resource for SCCM members as well as the general critical care community.

The multiprofessional critical care team of chest physicians, surgeons, pediatricians, pharmacists/pharmacologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals has benefited from the clinical research published in CCM since its inception in 1973. Earlier this year, the journal was named one of the most influential journals in biology and medicine over the last 100 years by the Special Library Association (SLA).

“We have maintained our commitment to publishing the finest original articles on significant work within critical care and to providing a scholarly forum for the exchange of ideas related to the management of the critically ill and injured,” said CCM Editor in Chief Joseph E. Parrillo, MD, FCCM. “SLA’s recognition of the excellence of our publication is a tribute to the authors, contributors, editorial staff, and the entire critical care community.”

PCCM is equally influential, being the first scientific, peer-reviewed journal to focus exclusively on pediatric critical care and critical care neonatology. Launched in July 2000, it is distributed six times a year and selected abstracts are translated into six languages.

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) extends its congratulations and thanks to the journal editors as well as to the editorial boards and staff.
