Paragon FAQs

Q: What is the Paragon Critical Care Quality Implementation Program?

A: Paragon is a unique service perfected and offered by the Society of Critical Medicine. Intended for hospitals seeking to improve the culture and/or operations of their ICU, Paragon maximizes the efficacy of dedicated and personalized expert coaching using a data driven approach.

Q: What makes Paragon different?

A: The Society of Critical Care Medicine is the world's largest critical care association with over 15,000 adult and pediatric critical care members. Of these members, 40 multiprofesional experts currently practicing in the field and with advanced skills in quality/performance improvement coaching are available to partner with your hospital. Paragon experts are actively working in critical care in both academic and community hospital environments. They clearly understand today's barriers and challenges. Paragon is not a generic consulting service. It is an individualized partnership program with collaborative interaction that aims to get results through an unbiased view, expert practical assistance and straightforward communication. We come to your hospital to see and investigate what your challenges are and then help you to find the most cost effective and efficient solutions.

Q: What are the areas of help I can ask for?

A: Paragon offers a myriad of assistance. There are very few challenges that we cannot address because we lead in understanding the unique nature and power of multiprofessional critical care teams. We live and breathe critical care. We believe that all health care is local and community hospitals are not the same as academic centers – therein is the strength of Paragon. Whether you need a one day visit for assessment with onsite instruction or a comprehensive overview with feedback and coaching, we can work together to find solutions to your most perplexing problems. Because of the rich experiential base offered by the multiprofessional coaches, you can designate almost any critical care operations/culture challenge. PICU and AICU coaches including senior directors, VPs, advanced practice nurses, critical care pharmacists and respiratory, occupational and physical therapists are chosen based on their match to your hospital. In this way, you can rest assured that your uniquely dedicated coaching team will be an excellent fit for the partnership.

Q: What are the terms and costs of the engagement?

A: Hospitals contract with SCCM for services. Pricing is based on the coaching team make-up and the length of the engagement. The current standard delivers a full multiprofessional team including physician, nurse, pharmacist, respiratory therapist and improvement advisor coach. Travel and lodging for the coaching team for onsite visit days is billed separately and varies depending on the origin of the coaching team and contracting hospital's location (estimates are available). A deposit is due upon agreement signature. Hospitals able to seek and secure sponsorship to supplement costs are welcome to do so.

Q: How will we know if Paragon is right for us?

A: Paragon offers a "getting to know us" call so that you can meet a coaching team and confidentially discuss your needs. A preliminary assessment may also be available for hospitals interested in dedicating a bit more time. For details contact Lori Harmon, Program Manager at 847-493-6403 or lharmon@sccm.org.
