As an international leader in critical care, the Society collaborates with many quality and patient safety organizations to help realize the vision of Right Care, Right Now

AMA Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement

The American Medical Association Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® was established to identify and, when necessary, develop and define performance measurement sets and quality improvement tools useful for the practicing physician.

The mission of the Consortium is to improve patient health and safety by:

  • Identifying and developing evidence-based clinical performance measures that enhance quality of patient care and that foster accountability.
  • Promoting the implementation of effective and relevant clinical performance improvement activities.
  • Advancing the science of clinical performance measurement and improvement

The Society is a member of the Consortium and advocates for the role of the expert team in all proposals that affect the delivery of quality critical care. Click here to view critical care measures.

AACN Healthy Work Environment

The Society joined the quality care collaborative aimed at promoting AACN guidelines for healthy work environments. Click here to access details.

Institute for Healthcare Improvement

The 100K Lives Campaign from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) was a major success in 2006. The 5 Million lives campaign which followed, reinforced the fundamental principle of harm prevention.  The Society is proud to have served as a Scientific Partner and urges members to continue to build upon their success from past participation.  The six interventions include:

SEPSIS

The Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) is a partnership of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. This active partnership was formed following a 2002 international survey to investigate physician’s views on sepsis, in particular, their satisfaction with current definitions, routes to diagnosis and treatment options. As a result of that survey, a six point action plan was developed to reduce global mortality from severe sepsis by 25% in 2009. To learn more about the campaign including the bundles, the guidelines, and the performance improvement database, please visit www.survivingsepsis.org.

Other Collaboration Activities

The Society is active in several other efforts in collaboration with leading patient safety and quality organizations.

  • National Quality Forum  The Society is a member of the NQF, and our NQF and Consortium representatives work closely with each other to ensure measures relevant to critical care are appropriate for the expert team.
  • Hospital Quality Alliance The Society is now a member of the HQA. A consortium of consumer representatives, physician and nursing organizations, employers and payers, oversight organizations and government agencies. It is a national public-private collaboration that is committed to making meaningful, relevant, and easily understood information about hospital performance accessible to the public and to informing and encouraging efforts to improve quality. A work product of the HQA is a collaborative website Hospital Compare publically reports hospital performance information in a consistent, unified manner. In addition to the website, HQA advances measures endorsed by the National Quality Forum.
  • Success stories and links to partner organizations are detailed on the LearnICU Quality Web page.
