Multidisciplinary Critical Care Knowledge Assessment Program (MCCKAP)

For the first time this year, the MCCKAP exam will be offered online, providing almost immediate feedback to participants on their level of critical care knowledge. In addition, since the exam is now paperless, mailing and administrative costs for programs are reduced. Programs will still receive the same advanced statistical analysis of their fellows as a group, but this year that comprehensive feedback will be provided more quickly.

The 2010 exam will take place nationally March 1-5.

The registration deadline has been extended to Wednesday February 3, 2010.

Available in both adult and pediatric formats, the exam consists of approximately 200 multiple-choice questions pertaining to critical care knowledge and patient-management based on national standards. MCCKAP is among the most comprehensive methods for determining strengths and weaknesses of the fellows enrolled in critical care fellowship programs.

  • MCCKAP is prepared by multidisciplinary critical care physicians who are experienced in examination preparation and analysis.
  • Program directors and fellows can assess their level of critical care knowledge both as individuals and as fellowship program participants as a group.
  • Participants can identify their specific areas of weakness in their study of critical care.
  • Fellows may use MCCKAP as a preparation tool for the subspecialty board examinations in critical care.

Online MCCKAP Exam Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is the exam being offered online instead of the traditional booklet and Scantron?

Offering an online exam allows SCCM to provide participants immediate feedback on their level of critical care knowledge. Preliminary results, as well as preliminary results by knowledge area, will be provided to the examinee upon completion of the exam. Immediate feedback helps participants identify content areas of strength and weakness, with enough time to focus on areas of weakness as they prepare to take the subspecialty board examination.

  • How do immediate results differ from traditional results?

Immediate results include a preliminary comprehensive score, as well as preliminary scores by knowledge area, or category. Results are considered preliminary until the key is validated by the MCCKAP Committee, which will occur within days after the close of the examination week. Validation is an important step to ensure that items with questionable performance statistics are reviewed before final scores are calculated. Generally, few items are affected by the key validation so your preliminary results will likely be the same or closely approximate your final results. Final results, as in past years, will be provided approximately 6-8 weeks after exam week.

  • How will I receive immediate results?

Results will be displayed on screen after completion of the exam. These results may be printed upon viewing, sent to an e-mail address, or both.

  • What if I lose my immediate results? Can I get another copy of them?

Your program director has online access to your results should you need additional copies.

  • Do I need special hardware or software to take the exam?

No. The exam will be offered via a link on the SCCM Web site that will be provided by your program director. You do, however, need to use a computer that has a reliable, high-speed Internet connection.

  • When and where will the link to the exam be provided?

The link and complete instructions for administering the test will be sent via e-mail to your Program Director one week prior to the exam week.

  • Can I take the exam at home now that it is offered online?

SCCM encourages all exams to be taken in a proctored environment in order to provide a setting that will best prepare participants for the subspecialty board exam.

  • Will I be required to login when I click on the link to the exam?

Yes. Your proctor will provide you with your User ID and Password.

  • Because the exam is online, do I have to take it all in one sitting or can I return to it later?

As in the past, the MCCKAP exam is meant to provide examinees with a practice exam-taking experience. Therefore, it must be taken in one sitting and will be a timed examination. The exam consists of two parts, and 4 hours total are allotted to complete the exam. You are allowed one break in between parts, without the timer, at your program director’s discretion.

  • Will I lose my answers if I lose my Internet connection?

No. Answers are automatically saved once you hit submit. The only answer you may lose is that of the question you were working on. If you lose your Internet connection, log back onto the exam and continue working.

  • Will there be technical assistance available during exam week?

Yes, technical assistance will be available. The phone number and email address of technical support personnel will accompany confirmed registrations.

  • If I decide to change an answer to a previous question, may I go back to change the answer?

Yes. You will be able to scroll back to change your answer to a previous question, if it is in the same part of the exam.

  • If I finish Part 1 of the exam early, can I move ahead to Part 2 without taking a break?

The break screen on your monitor will stop the time automatically after Part 1, but you may click to begin Part 2 at any time.

  • What are the start and end dates and times to take the exam?

The online exam will be enabled early morning on March 1, 2010, and will be disabled at the end of the day on March 5. If your group cannot take the exam during this period, contact SCCM before exam week to discuss your needs. The deadline for registration is February 1, 2010.

  • What is the cost of this year’s exam?

The cost of this year’s exam is $250.
