American Medical Boards

U.S. trained physician members of SCCM are certified in their area of training. As critical care is a subspecialty of four primary medical specialties, SCCM has contact with these primary medical boards. Medical boards offer independent evaluation and recertification for physicians and are accountable to both the public and the profession. They also set standards in their areas and certify that those individuals who pass their exams and maintain their certification have demonstrated the clinical judgment, skills and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent patient care.

American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)
American Board of Surgery (ABS)
American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)

In Internal Medicine, physicians can follow two different pathways to critical care training. They may take a combined pulmonology/critical care training program or they may train exclusively in critical care.

U.S. physicians trained in Emergency Medicine have long sought to be certified in critical care. However, as their primary training is not in one of the above four specialties, they were not able to sit for any of the critical care subspecialty board examinations. However, in 2010 ABEM achieved an agreement with the American Board of Internal Medicine to become a co-sponsor in IM Critical Care Medicine. This means that Emergency Medicine residents will have access to training in two-year CCM Internal Medicine-sponsored fellowship programs upon completion of their EM residencies. Following successful completion of the fellowship, they will be eligible for certification in Internal Medicine Critical Care Medicine. ABIM and ABEM have issued a joint statement related to continued discussions concerning ABEM’s co-sponsorship of ABIM’s Critical Care Medicine (CCM) subspecialty. The statement explains the intent of both organizations’ interest in CCM co-sponsorship. Attached is the joint statement.

Have you ever thought about going that extra step to advance your knowledge in critical care medicine? This is the perfect opportunity to do just that. The fellowship program is available for medical practitioners after they have completed their residency and internship for their specialty practice. The five main categories available for accredited fellowship program follow, with links to the contact information, locations, and descriptions of the particular available accredited fellowship programs. It's all up to you now.
