The Society of Critical Care Medicine promotes a multiprofessional team approach to the practice of critical care. The Respiratory Therapist (RT) is an integral part of the team providing expertise in airway management, mechanical ventilation, and physiologic monitoring. This Section communicates to the Society, issues dealing with respiratory care practice and provides technical expertise and guidance for the mutual interests of Critical Care Respiratory Therapists and the Society. Our purpose will be to provide support to the Society and Section members through research and education in the areas of clinical, scientific, and technical aspects of patient care.

Respiratory Care Section Plan
The plan will reflect the sections' focus to complete the mission as stated.  The plan will be to:
  • State an agreed upon mission of the Section.
  • Education: Develop a plan to assure that the Section becomes an integral part of the Society by educating both the Society members and the special interests of the Respiratory Care Section members. This includes the education of members of the Society of the role of the RT in critical care, and exploring the expanded role that RT can be utilized within. Further, enhanced, formal education of the RT, specifically in the area of critical care will be expanded.
  • Research: Responsible for designing a means to promote research among the Section members through abstracts, posters, and studies that would be of benefit to the field of critical care.
  • Communication: Key to the success of the Section, a structure of communication needs to be developed. The structure design is essential to relay information between the Society, the Section Chair, and the Section members.
  • State an agreed upon mission of the Section.
