Family-Centered Care Award Overview
The Family-Centered Care Award will be presented at the 2011 SCCM Critical Care Congress to recognize innovation to improve the care provided to critically ill and injured patients, the family, and those chosen by the patient to be with them. This award is sponsored by the SCCM Patient and Family Support Committee.
The Family-Centered Care Award will be given to one unit/program. The award consists of a free registration to SCCM’s 2011 Critical Care Congress for one team member of the unit/program and a commemorative plaque for the team. There will be up to two honorable mention awards that will each receive a plaque.
Information on Family-Centered Care Award recipients will be placed on the awards page on the SCCM Web site. The award is sponsored by SCCM, and applications are reviewed by a subcommittee of the Patient and Family Support Committee.
Exemplars abstracted from award applications may be used by the Patient and Family Support Committee of SCCM to describe strategies to improve patient and family support in publications further developed by the committee with credit given to the author of the exemplar.
Criteria:
Applications are evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Project linked to direct patient care
- Moves the field forward and raises the standard for family-centered care
- Demonstrates innovation and provides models for emulation
- Evidences interdisciplinary efforts to improve care inclusive of families in the ICU
- Provides comprehensive services
- Fosters support for families of critically ill patients in ways that are meaningful to the family
- Includes the family in efforts to provide care to critically ill patients during their ICU stay, inclusive of end-of-life care
- Provides data for evaluation of effectiveness
Eligibility:
To be eligible to apply for the award, the family-centered care initiative described in the application must be established for a minimum of one year. At least one member of the team must be a current member of SCCM. Members of the Family-Centered Care Award subcommittee are ineligible.
Award applicants are encouraged to link proposals to one of the recommendations from the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Support of the Family in the Patient-Centered Intensive Care Unit. Those that have collected and analyzed data associated with a project also should consider submitting an abstract for the 40th Critical Care Congress.
Process:
- The application is limited to three typewritten pages.
- Page one should be a cover page that includes team members, their affiliation(s) and team leader contact information (address, email, fax and phone.)
- Pages two and three should describe the critical care setting and how the environment supports patients and people close to the patient, such as families and friends. Direct references to the institution or team member's names are not to be included on pages two or three.
- The applicant must agree to allow information that is submitted to be used for publicity purposes to promote family-centered care.
- Winners will be notified at least two months before Congress begins.
- The award will be presented during the ACCM Convocation/SCCM Awards Presentation at the Annual Congress. A representative from the institution is expected to attend.
