The intensive care team is a group of multiprofessional individuals consisting of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other specialties dedicated to the care of critically ill patients. The U.S. is facing a potential shortage of intensive care unit (ICU) physicians given the current levels of medical education and training regulations for residents. As a result of this issue, the healthcare community needs to assess how to deliver services more effectively and efficiently, and determine the future roles of physicians and other healthcare professions.
SCCM has developed a series of six webcasts dealing with the topic of workforce issues and challenges facing ICU clinicians, physicians, program directors, and hospital administrators.
