Program Overview
Nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) with specific training and experience in critical care have evolved as an important strategy to augment the critical care provider pool and address both the increased demand for critical care-qualified providers and the relative shortage of physician intensivists. This fourth webcast in a series addressing the ICU workforce will focus on clarifying the roles of NPs and PAs on the ICU team. Experts who have experience with using NPs and PAs to enhance the ICU team will address important considerations related to roles and scope of practice.
Program Format
This webcast consists of PowerPoint discussions followed by a participant question and answer session.
Identification of Participant Learning Gaps
Participants of workforce sessions held during the 2011 Congress indicated an increased interest in ICU workforce issues. Current regulatory changes and healthcare reform legislation will impact the ICU workforce and many administrators and clinicians are unaware of their specific implications.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webcast, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss factors impacting scope of practice and roles of nurse practitioners and physician assistants in the ICU
- Identify strategies for maximizing roles of nurse practitioners and physician assistants that can be used to enhance staffing models for the ICU team to meet patient care needs
