Program Overview:
Physicians and nurses find it uncomfortable to openly discuss death. Typically these discussions are left for very late in the disease course, if they occur at all. Discussing palliative care with patients and their families focuses on relief of suffering, psychosocial support and closure near the end of life. In this webcast, Richard J. Wall, MD, MPH, will provide methods for communicating with families of critically ill patients in order to provide optimal outcomes. Additional faculty will present information on how ICU staff can cope with the difficulties of death and dying in the ICU in order to overcome their communication barriers and work more effectively with patients and their families.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this webcast participants will be able to:
- Explore family-focused outcomes and what they mean to staff, patients and their loved ones
- Discuss the role of ethics and how multiprofessional teams can consider these matters in dealing with families
- Review how to help staff utilize services to reduce their own stress when dealing with families in these difficult moments
- Review best practices related to respect for cultural and spiritual needs
