Program Overview:
Approximately one half million critically ill patients die in the ICU annually.  Others may survive their acute illness only to remain chronically ill with functional and cognitive impairments.  For these patients palliative care including symptom control, patient and family support indicates a strong need for communication skills to align treatments with patient and family values and preferences.  These communication skills are becoming recognized as an integral component of ICU care.  This webcast is intended to provide an understanding of how effective use of the communication bundles in the ICU can reduce patient and family anxiety, provide a more positive environment for the critically ill patient and reduce unnecessary costs.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this webcast participants will be able to:

  • Review the Communication Bundle utilized in the state-wide Rhode Island Critical Care Collaborative;
  • Discuss implementation barriers and how to overcome those barriers;
  • Demonstrate materials that have worked in other institutions for family communication and medical records documentation;
  • Share what data to collect, how to collect it and what to do with the information; and
  • Discuss the principles and practie of improving the quality of palliative care in the ICU, state wide.
