ICU Infection in an Era of Multi-Resistance

June 4 – 6, 2009
The Palmer House® Hilton
Chicago, Illinois, USA

New Sessions

Current reports of an outbreak of H1N1 Influenza in humans have fueled concern about the potential for a pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are tracking the current H1N1 Influenza outbreak, mobilizing state and federal agencies in the United State and abroad to prevent the spread.

In light of these reports, organizers of the upcoming ICU Infection in the Era of Multi-Resistance conference will sharpen the program’s focus to address the emerging issues brought about by the outbreak of H1N1 Influenza.

A new session, "Fundamentals of Dealing with Flu Epidemics," has been added on Friday, June 5th, featuring Dr. Randy Wax. Dr. Wax was instrumental in developing Canada’s Guidelines for Flu Outbreaks. He will provide an overview of guidelines and discuss how hospitals/ICUs can increase preparedness for flu-like epidemics.

Thursday, June 4th, will feature the presentations "What Have Epidemics Taught Us," "Identifying the Patient at Risk," and "The Right Drug for the Right Infection" and a lively pro/con discussion on the topic related to the effectiveness of isolation as a means to prevent cross-contamination. All presentations have been updated to provide the latest breaking information on identification of who's at risk for these viral infections and how to gauge their short- and long-term health risks.

Overview

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than   2 million hospital-acquired infections occur annually and are responsible for 90,000 deaths. Infectious diseases are now the second leading cause of death worldwide. Today, Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pose a severe threat to public health and underscore the need for critical care professionals to equip themselves with the most effective infection control strategies.

Many new and reemerging microbial threats, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), avian influenza virus, and West Nile virus will challenge intensive care providers well into the future. With government and private insurers increasingly refusing to reimburse providers for treatment of hospital-acquired infections, the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) choose this topic for their 8th Summer Conference. The presenters will:

  • Discuss infectious disease guidelines for the control and/or prevention of infectious diseases and emerging flu strains.
  • Develop methods/strategies for identifying patients with a potential risk for contracting antibiotic-resistant infections and emerging flu strains.
  • Identify appropriate drug or drug/therapy combinations for combating antibiotic-resistant infections and emerging flu strains.
  • Evaluate hospital and ICU team management strategies for superbugs, foreseeable antibiotic-resistant infections, and emerging flu strains of the future.
