Pediatric O2 Series: Moving Oxygen Around Critically ill pediatric patients have a high incidence of anemia at the time of admission and throughout their pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) stay. The use of packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusions is common, with approximately 17% of all pediatric ICU patients receiving transfusions. However, there are risks associated with PRBC transfusions, including infections, transfusion reactions, fluid overload, and medical errors.
