Society of Critical Care Medicine Welcomes New President
(Des Plaines, Ill., Feb. 19, 2007) – Frederick P. Ognibene, MD, FCCM, becomes the 37th President of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) during the annual Critical Care Congress in Orlando, Florida.
In his role as SCCM President, Dr. Ognibene will serve as the Society’s primary spokesperson while helping the organization carry out its mission to secure the highest quality care for all critically ill and injured patients. As a member of the Society for the past 23 years and a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) for 18, Dr. Ognibene has participated actively on numerous committees and task forces. “Being involved in the Society and its activities has offered me the opportunity to further develop my personal and professional education and commitment to the critical care field,” said Dr. Ognibene. “It’s an honor to serve as the president of such a diverse and amazing organization, and I look forward to furthering its mission and vision during my term.” David J. Dr. Ognibene is currently the director of the office of clinical research training and medical education at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center and is an attending physician in critical care medicine at the NIH Clinical Center, which is the NIH’s clinical research hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Ognibene received a bachelor’s degree in biology magna cum laude from the University of Rochester in New York and a medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center and a fellowship in critical care medicine at the NIH Clinical Center. Since 1989, Dr. Ognibene has served in many capacities with SCCM, including abstract reviewer; symposium program co-chair in 1998; Council and Executive Committee member since 2003; and Secretary for the past two years. In addition, he has chaired the Credentials Committee of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and served as Secretary-General of its Board of Regents for two years.
Dr. Ognibene is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Federation for Medical Research, and former board member of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University Alumni Association. He is author or co-author of approximately 200 publications including peer-reviewed research, book chapters and abstracts. He is co-editor of the Handbook of Critical Care Drug Therapy, now in its third edition, and is co-editor with Dr. John I. Gallin of the second edition of Principles and Practice of Clinical Research, which will be published in late spring. He also serves as a reviewer for 15 peer-review journals including SCCM’s journal, Critical Care Medicine and was former editor of SCCM’s newsmagazine, Critical Connections.
In addition, Dr. Ognibene’s honors include numerous commendations and awards for his administrative and clinical contributions to critical care. He has also received several bench-to-bedside awards from the NIH to support translational clinical research projects, including “Targeted Delivery of Nitric Oxide by Hemoglobin to Improve Regional Blood Flow in Sickle Cell Disease” and “Novel Therapies for Sickle Cell Disease.” He has received multiple NIH Clinical Center Director's Awards and the NIH Director’s Award for Mentoring in 2003. Dr. Ognibene is a member of the United States Public Health Service (PHS) Corps until March 2007 and during his 22-year career as an officer has received the PHS Outstanding Unit Citation, Commendation Medal, and Outstanding Service Medal for his scientific and administrative achievements. He is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
In addition to his professional career, Dr. Ognibene is an active in a number of visual arts’ organizations in the Washington, D.C. area and has served as a member of the board of directors of the Cultural Development Corporation of D.C. and the Washington Project for the Arts/Corcoran. He is currently a member of the Contemporary Collection Committee and Curator’s Circle at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
