The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) is the only professional organization devoted exclusively to the advancement of multiprofessional critical care medicine through excellence in patient care, education, research, and advocacy.
SCCM has a worldwide membership of more than 14,000 from a diverse group of highly-trained professionals including intensivists, critical care nurses, critical care pharmacists/pharmacologists, respiratory therapists, technicians and social workers.
The Society was created in 1970 to educate medical professionals and the community about the need for intensivists and critical care practitioners.
SCCM Programs
Two peer-reviewed scientific journals, directed at improving the care of the critically ill and injured. Critical Care Medicine covers all aspects of acute and emergency care for the critically ill, including the latest news on clinical breakthroughs and promising research. Pediatric Critical Care Medicine is devoted exclusively to pediatric and neonatal intensive care medicine.
Annual Scientific Congress, which brings together more than 5,000 members of the Society to attend lectures, workshops, panel discussions, and special sessions.
Educational course offerings include the Fundamental Critical Care Support Course (FCCS) and Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support, courses intended to provide basic critical care principles for the non-intensivist healthcare provider; Fundamentals of Disaster Management (FDM), a one-day course to arm professionals with the expertise to manage large-scale disasters; and Multiprofessional Critical Care Knowledge Assessment Program (MCCKAP), an annual exam to prepare physicians-in-training for the subspecialty certifications and provide fellowship directors the opportunity to analyze fellows' level of knowledge in critical care medicine.
The Society's fundraising arm helps to secure funding for research and education of the critical care community, as well as providing valuable information to the public by securing philanthropic contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations.
American College of Critical Care Medicine, an honorary society for critical care practitioners encourages excellence in multidisciplinary critical care and honors those who demonstrate personal and professional commitment to the profession.
