Pamela Lipsett, MD, MHPE, FCCM

Dr. Lipsett, is Professor of Surgery, Anesthesia, and Critical Care, and Nursing, and Co-Director, Surgical Intensive Care Units at Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine and Nursing, Baltimore. She is also the Program Director for General Surgery and for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. She is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care and has a degree in Medical Education from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Lipsett has been honored as an outstanding clinical teacher at Johns Hopkins by the medical student class and received the Professors Award for Teaching of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students at Johns Hopkins.

After receiving her Bachelor of Art in molecular biology from Regis College, in Weston, Massachusetts, and her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, in Worcester, Dr. Lipsett completed an internship and residency in general surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. She served as Surgical Registrar at The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England, and Administrative Chief of Service in General Surgery at Johns Hopkins.  Additionally, Dr. Lipsett holds a Faculty Advanced Training Specialty Certificate in gastrointestinal surgery. She has remained at Johns Hopkins since her residency training where she has risen through the academic ranks to her current tenured position.

With research interests include phase II, III trials of agents for critically ill patients, especially sepsis, prevention and management of nosocomial infection, and outcomes and cost effectiveness, Dr. Lipsett has been the principal investigator on numerous research projects. She is author or co-author of 350 publications, including book chapters, abstracts, journal articles, and editorials.

Dr Lipsett is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and President-Elect  of the Surgical Infection Society, Dr Lipsett has been an active member of SCCM since 1990 and has served in a number of roles on behalf the Society and of the surgical section. She has focused on the many educational activities of the Society serving as Chair for the Multidisciplinary Review Course, for seven years on the Program Committee ending as Educational Symposium Co-Chair for the 31st Critical Care Congress (with Hector Wong), and as the Editor of the Adult MCCKAP. Dr Lipsett has been Chair of the Membership Committee of both the Society (1998-2002), as the Surgical Section’s Chair and as President of the Society 2011-2012.
